Study groups: new groups for 2010/2011

This year, we would like to start some additional interest groups for our members to enjoy. Several possibilities have been suggested, as detailed below. If you feel that any of these topics would be of interest to you, please tick the box on the membership application form when you join. If there is enough interest, some or all of these groups will begin holding meetings.

Update! The Scrabble Group has been formed, and has held a successful first meeting. The Opera Group also proved popular, and meetings will begin soon, alternating between afternoon and evening sessions. Sadly, the Wine Appreciation Group failed to attract enough interest, and so the idea has been abandoned for now. The Poetry Group is still under discussion.

Poetry Leader: not yet determined. There is a lot of interest in poetry amongst our members, and our poetry afternoon, where members read poetry of their choice, and in some cases their own writing, is always very popular. Our previous Poetry Group ended when the leader was unable to continue, but if a new leader can be found the group could restart, perhaps with a more relaxed style, for example, choosing a single poem for informal discussion at each meeting.

Scrabble Leader: Pauline Ross (01667 453537). This group would meet monthly in Pauline's home in Nairn to play Scrabble (or other group board games, if the members want to). Improve your knowledge of obscure words using the letters Q, K and Z in an informal and entertaining environment.

Wine appreciation Leader: not yet determined. This was a popular idea amongst Committee members! The group would meet monthly in a member's home to sample different wines and discuss them. Wines could be chosen by region or grape or any other criterion. Wines could be supplied by members each bringing a bottle, or else the leader could buy a selection, with members contributing to the cost.

Opera Leader: Alan Niven (01667 459449). This highbrow offshoot of the Music Group would meet once a month at Alan's home in Nairn to watch an opera on DVD.

For more information about any of these groups, contact Secretary Pauline Ross (01667 453537) or email.
